In his study Restored to Our Destiny: Eschatology & the Image of God in Herman Bavinck’s Reformed Dogmatics (Studies in Reformed Theology 21; Leiden: Brill, 2012), Brian G. Mattson speaks in a footnote on page 114 about Herman Bavinck’s “virtually unknown 1884 address, ‘De Mensch, Gods Evenbeeld’” (Man, the Image of God) and refers to the archives where the manuscript of this address can be found. However, readers who do not have easy access to the archives of the Historisch Documentatiecentrum at VU University Amsterdam may be pleased to know that a fascinating English quotation from this manuscript can be found on page 34 of On the Way to the Living God.

Moreover, the first pages of the manuscript (with introduction and commentary) have been published in the volume Ontmoetingen met Herman Bavinck (ed. George Harinck and Gerrit Neven; Barneveld: De Vuurbaak, 2006):

Bovenmate ernstig en voor ons allen van hoog praktisch belang is de beantwoording der vraag: van waar zijn wij en waartoe zijn we hier. Er is wel niemand, wien die vraag zich niet eens opgedrongen heeft. Although the manuscript does not reflect Bavinck’s most profound and mature reflections on the topic under discussion (he was only 29 or 30 years old when he wrote the manuscript and it was an address intended for a general audience), lovers of the young Bavinck may consider to publish the full manuscript along with an English translation and annotation.
