The following libraries and online resources are available to students and faculty and staff of the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo (ETSC).

The GEM

The Global DTL contains 10,000s of theological books in English, as well as many journals and music. ETSC students: find on Moodle the password that is needed to view most books.

Libraries available through the Global DTL

The Global DTL is a ‘library of libraries’. The books and journal articles that you find in the Global DTL are located in other digital libraries, such as:

Biblical Archaeology Review and other resources related to biblical archaeology

1000s of books: T&T Clark Handbooks, International Critical Commentary, etc.

1000s of books in biblical studies, religious studies, and theology and world Christianity

Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception and 1000s of books in German and English

Encyclopedia of Religion, Encyclopedia of Philosophy, New Catholic Encyclopedia, etc.

Academic journals and 1000s of books (Fortress Press, Liturgical Press, many university presses)

Hundreds of classical authors in Greek/Latin and English (incl. Josephus, Philo, early Christian)

15,000+ books. Overlaps with JSTOR collection, but option to download books as a whole.

Pannenberg’s Systematic Theology, books by Baker, Eerdmans, IVP, Zondervan, etc.

The ETSC Library Catalog lists 40,000+ books in Arabic and 32,000+ books in English. These are physical books that can be found in ETSC’s libraries in Cairo and in Alexandria, Minya, Asyut, and Sohag.

The MENATE Digital Library contains 1100+ theological books in Arabic. ETSC students: sign in with the email address with which you are registered on Sola and click on “Forgot password?”

Other Libraries

The Internet Archive contains millions of books, most in English, incl. theology. Create your own free account to ‘borrow’ books published between ca. 1930 and 2015.

The Wiley Online Library contains thousands of books and journals in English. In Egypt, one has free access to most resources – no password needed. Outside Egypt access may be limited.

The SBL Online Book Repository contains 700+ English books in the area of biblical studies. Free access from lower-income countries only – no password needed.

Color codes (used in the next sections of this page)

  • Grey: free access, no registration required.
  • Black: free access, free personal registration required (e.g., Internet Archive books to borrow)
  • Green: free access from Egypt but not from high-income countries (e.g., Wiley Online Library and SBL Online Book Repository)
  • Yellow: Global DTL password required
  • Blue: MENATE Digital Library account required.
  • Red: available in the physical ETSC library (or another physical library in Cairo)
