De Egyptische theoloog dr. Atef M. Gendy, rector van het Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo, de predikantsopleiding van de presbyteriaanse kerk in Egypte en één van de belangrijkste centra voor christelijke theologie in de Arabische wereld, is zojuist in Nederland geland. Kom om hem te horen en te ontmoeten op 13, 14 of 16 juni.

Zaterdag 13 juni: toespraak landelijke GZB-dag in Gorinchem

Het thema van de landelijke GZB-dag is: “Laat de kerk niet verdwijnen!” Dr. Atef spreekt in het Engels, met Nederlandse vertaling, tijdens het ochtendprogramma. Tijdens het middagprogramma wordt o.a. Samer Karam geïnterviewd, die recent zijn predikantsopleiding aan het seminarie in Caïro heeft afgerond. Andere sprekers zijn ds. P. van Duijvenboden (legerpredikant), ds. M. Klaassen (Sliedrecht), ds. K. van Meijeren (Ede) en Willem-Jan de Wit (Caïro)

Het thema van deze studiemorgen voor predikanten is: “Niets te verliezen: De uitdaging om kerk te zijn in deze tijd.” Dr. Atef zal in het Engels spreken over: “The challenge of being a minority in Egypt.” Adere sprekers zijn Ing. Rinus Vaders MFM and prof. dr. Stefan Paas.

Over dr. Atef M. Gendy

July 1, 2015 will mark the fifteenth anniversary of Dr. Atef Gendy’s appointment as the President of the Evangelical Theological Seminary. In addition to these administrative duties he teaches one semester of each year as a Professor of New Testament for the Cairo campus.

Atef initially worked as a civil engineer from 1982-1984, then served for eight years (1984–1992) as director of a training center in the south of Egypt to help equip lay leaders for the ministry in village churches (especially in churches that had no pastors). He followed his calling to enroll at ETSC and graduated in 1992. He selected that same year as an Instructor in New Testament.

Dr. Gendy earned his Ph.D. in 2001 from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, where he studied under I. Howard Marshall and wrote his thesis on “The Parables of Jesus or the Parables of Mathew? A question of the Authenticity of the Parables in the First Gospel” He has written study notes to the book of Acts for the Bible Society of Egypt and is currently serving as a translation consultant for the Revised Arabic Bible Translation (Van Dyke). He has an Arabic book in print about the Interpretation of the Parables of Jesus with Dar Al-Thaqafa Publishing House. He currently serves on the editorial committee for an ongoing project (The Arabic Contemporary commentary), which is a mutual endeavor between the same publishing house and Langham. He also is writing a commentary on Matthew for this project.

Dr. Gendy was also among the 12 scholars who comprised the committee formed by The World Evangelical Alliance to handle the debated translations of the familial divine terms “Father/Son”.

Atef is recognized as a leader in the Synod of the Nile where he serves on several ministries and agencies in the Synod of the Nile as well as the Session of his local congregation. He is a member of the newly formed Council of Churches of Egypt and is frequently asked to speak in the U.S. and Europe about the circumstances and witness of the Evangelical Church in Egypt.
